I blogged about glass bottles earlier this week, and the theme of the month has been about learning to avoid BPA in all of its nefarious shapes and forms in the kitchen.. but what happens when you want to take your hot or cold beverages on the go?!
For those instances where glass may not be the wisest option due to the breakage factor (going hiking, for instance) the next best option to avoid BPA and maintain a sustainable lifestyle is… *drumroll*… stainless steel!

How Vacuum Bottles Work
This bottle really ideal for on the go drink storage, ESPECIALLY now that it is fall, with winter approaching, and hot drinks are pretty much mandatory this time of year, haha. A vacuum bottle is a super-insulated flask. The bottle has an inner chamber and an outer case separated by two layers of stainless steel with a vacuum in between. There’s also a tight, screw-down stopper on the top.
These few, simple features prevent virtually all heat transfer by either conduction, convection, or radiation. The vacuum prevents conduction. The tight stopper prevents air from entering or leaving the flask, so convection isn’t possible either. There’s virtually no way heat can escape from a vacuum flask and a hot drink stored inside will stay steaming hot for several hours.
Flasks also work for cold drinks. If heat can’t escape from a vacuum flask, it follows that heat can’t penetrate into a flask from outside either. The sealed stopper stops heat getting in by convection; the vacuum stops conduction, and the metal lining between the outer case and the inner chamber stops heat radiating in either.
Whether you like your coffee piping hot or icy cold, vacuum bottles are an absolutely brilliant way to keep your drinks just the way you want. This particular bottle keeps cold liquids at their initial temperature for up to 24 hours and hot liquids at their initial temperature for up to 12 hours!
And did I mention that this bottle is BPA free, and available in 4 fun colors?! (Black, white, grey and purple!)
More Reasons to Choose Stainless Steel Bottles
This particular bottle is made with 18/8 stainless steel – which means the bottle is comprised of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The chromium binds oxygen to the surface of the product to protect the iron from oxidation (rust). Nickel also enhances the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. (The higher the nickel content, the more resistant the stainless steel is to corrosion.) This is a fairly common type of stainless steel for drinking vessels, and it is completely SAFE and environmentally friendly!
When it comes to reducing waste, saving money and being healthy, stainless steel bottles are most definitely one of the first and most important steps you could take. According to some estimates, if you traditionally purchase bottled water, switching to a reusable water bottle and simply using water filters will save you tons of cash, up to $200 a month depending on your current buying habits!
And of course, it means far less waste: 30 billion plastic water bottles are thrown away each year, and it takes 1.5 million barrels of oil to produce all that plastic and about 1,000 years for the bottles to decompose. (Yikes!)
So it goes without saying that stainless steel lasts longer! This holds true even when held up against BPA free reusable plastic. Reusable plastic wears out faster than you would think! Reusable plastic gets cracked easily, is prone to damage by heat or sun, and can be scratched easily. As soon as plastic shows any signs of wear it’s no longer safe to use. But steel is durable, and doesn’t wear out over time!
